Thanks to the exposure to many new and interesting things, you can experience a "high" feeling. Yes, this is called the ‘honeymoon’ phase. However, this highly positive moment, very eventful and socially interactive, might be followed by fatigue and hostility: differences suddenly appear, you are tired of passing from one event to another and talking with random people, and probably you are even sick of the country’s diet. That’s perfectly normal! You went through an emotional rollercoaster. Excitement, anxiety, nervousness, and hopefulness combined with the high concentration required in a new country (new culture, new system, new language) are exhausting. And now that adrenaline is over, frustration might kick in. However, you can adjust yourself if you do not give up!

Small steps you can take
  • Slow down the social rhythm if you like and cherish the people closer to you during your exchange. If you feel homesick, do not linger in long and everyday conversations with family and friends as it might worsen your feelings of homesickness.
  • Remind yourself that it is fine not to always be on the peak. There are no "right" or "wrong" but only "different"  ways to live your Erasmus. Ups and downs are normal in our lifetime and Erasmus makes no exception!
  • If you need to refocus on your inner self, assess carefully your needs and your wishes. Take time for yourself and your passions!
  • Do not hesitate to ask for psychological support. Some universities offer it to students for free. Visit the webpage of your hosting and sending university. If this service is available online, it might be easier to do it in your original language.
  • You like the local language and you find it useful but you are experiencing some type of fatigue in learning in a more traditional way such as classes. Consider learning through apps, songs or following some social media profiles! It is fun, light and useful!
